ABOUT US - OUR PROJECT
Hi and welcome to our website!
We are a group of students of a Secondary High School in Italy, “Liceo Scientifico“Andrea Genoino”, Cava de’ Tirreni (SA).
During the school year 2018-2019 we took part in a project (“Millennium: insights into the art of illuminated manuscripts”) supported by a EU funding programme.
Our primary goal was to promote the artistic and cultural heritage of our territory, more specifically the precious medieval manuscripts kept in the Benedictine abbey of the Holy Trinity in Cava de’ Tirreni.
The finely decorated miniatures which illuminate the ancient manuscripts have been figuratively brought ‘outside’ the walls of the Abbey and transferred to ceramic panels in order to become elements of urban design in our hometown.
The result of two modules (“Illuminated initials revisited through ceramics” and “Urban Design”) is a series of eight ceramic panels which are going to be located in the pre-existing niches of a parking area nearby the Town Hall, as shown in the urban regeneration plan which is an integral part of the project itself.
The students involved in the module called “Sites and Sights” have set up this website which includes some slides with information about the Abbey and the illuminated manuscripts, alongside some interesting facts about the old techniques used in the parchment-making process, or the most widely used types of script in the medieval manuscripts, and so on. A whole section of our site illustrates, step by step, the techniques and the procedures employed to create the ceramic panels.
The website also includes a photogallery and a link to a video of our making, which can be held as a sort of metaphorical journey through time and space, that is, the ‘sites and sights’ of our historical heritage.
Enjoy the tour!
