The valley was certainly inhabited by the Etruscans, the Romans and the Lombards; the currently inhabited area developed between the 14th and the 15th century as a trade center and, starting from the eighteenth century, it became a destination frequently chosen by famous painters and writers.
The Old Town is characterized by the charming Borgo Scacciaventi, a street lined with porticoes and historic buildings.

The Abbey of the Holy Trinity, founded in 1011, is the main landmark of the town and the site where valuable artworks are kept, as well as archives with precious incunabula, documents and manuscripts which are quite central for the reconstruction of the historical events in Southern Italy.

Cava de’ Tirreni also offers impressive natural sights, with its green hills by the sea, only a few kilometres from the Amalfi Coast.
